History
The Suburb in the City
Forest Hills South was built between 1939 and 1941 by Queens developer Pickman Realty as a rental apartment community. The development was spurred by the extension of the 8th Avenue Subway Line into Forest Hills, which put the neighborhood within a half-hour commute to Manhattan. Forest Hills South was envisioned as a self-contained community with ample green space and the ambiance of a suburb in Westchester or Long Island, just two short blocks from the Union Turnpike express subway station.

Forest Hills South was designed by Philip Birnbaum, an architect known for his ability to create spacious, airy apartments within a highly efficient layout. Details include columned entrances leading to elegant lobbies, apartments with high ceilings and sunken living rooms, and all modern conveniences. The seven Georgian-style buildings are placed on a green commons with charming fountains and carefully landscaped gardens.
A Premier Cooperative Community
Forest Hills South was converted to a cooperative community in 1985. Today, the property is owned by its resident-shareholders and managed by John B. Lovett & Associates, a respected real estate management company.
